ITG's ABCs: Weird Western Tales #48-49 (Oct.-Nov. 1978)

On this episode, I'm debuting a new feature called ITG's ABCs (which is short for Anthology & Back-up Comics Stories).  On ABCs, I'll be recapping the short tales (typically 8 pages in length) found in titles like World's Finest & Adventure Comics or in the back of comics like Unknown Soldier or (in this case) Weird Western Tales.

I've been looking forward to this feature, as it will allow me to broaden the number of characters and types of stories I'll be able to cover on this podcast.  First up, getting the ABCs treatment, is DC's western character Cinammon!  This determined firebrand made only 2 lead feature appearances (both covered here) before fading into obscurity at the dawn of the 1980s.

If a wild western adventure is up your alley, and you think 9 pages of story is just too much, I invite you to:

Great review of a fun character!

And you can immediately place the time of when this was published b the fact that the artist is 'Howie' Chaykin. Call him Howie now and you better duck.

And I love the idea of this segment. Dr. fate, Firestorm, and Creeper all were back, ups in the Flash. Nemesis in Brave and Bold. The private Life of Clark Kent. The world of Krypton. There are so many of these right no to choose from. And that's not even mentioning the dollar book anthologies.

Looking forward to this.

Thanks, Anj! There are a lot of options for this feature - I know! And I plan on learning a lot, too - the Nemesis feature is something I have no experience with, but I love the work of both writer & artist. I'm now officially on the lookout for those issues of Brave & Bold. Dollar Comics are on the show's radar, too, World's Finest especially.

Really enjoyed the episode, Cinnamon sounds like her strip would get old very fast, as quest strips tended to do (oh look, Rose & the Thorn has* taken down another member of The 100 - only 93 to go...). Also, she's not weird enough for Weird Western Tales and her look is naff, with the bleep jacket and hat.

Apart from that, I love her.

Even if you don't enjoy Nemesis, dig that fantastic logo!

* I think she counts as singular, hence 'has' not 'have ;)

(I don't know why so-called AutoCorrect changed 'Bolero' to 'bleep'!)

That pesky Auto(in)Correct! I agree with you about Cinnamon's potential - her adventures in the West would need to be diversified beyond the simple dispensation of justice. She'd have to get into the occasional alligator wrestling match or the odd sea voyage to China, a la Jonah Hex!

I very much appreciate you taking the time to write - thanks, Martin!
